Influences

I have been influenced by the work of my grandfather Jean Edmond MARTY (1900 – 1968)

Jean Edmond was born in 1900. He started studying at the Beaux Arts institution in Bordeaux and completed one year there.

In 1914, when WWI started, he had to put a hold on his studies at the Beaux Arts. Four years later, when WWI ended, he was too old to resume art classes.

He started to design advertising signboards and developed his own style of calligraphy. In the meantime, my grandfather continued to paint under the name of JEM. His style of painting was quite naïve, similar to the Douanier Rousseau.

His brother, Gaston MARTY, three years younger, took great interest in art as well. Gaston entered the Beaux Arts. After graduating, he became a well known teacher of Bordeaux’s Beaux Arts. He was also quite famous as a painter offering many exhibitions in Bordeaux.
